Well school has been going fab. As of March 3rd, I have completed 2 months and entered Phase 2 of school. Which is another 8 weeks of additional training before I am REALLY thrown to the wolves!

Although I've already had to cut someones hair, that I wasn't expecting! It came out good! Hair is really all about geometry!

Today I cut Madelines hair, long layers, came out GOOD. I also waxed her eyebrows.

Cynthia came in and I gave her a gorgeous deep brown all over color with shades of red and gold, very pretty color on her! She also bought one of out $10 coupon books, so I got that $10 profit :)

She's going to come in on Wednesday and bring her girls to get their eyebrows waxed and maybe we'll trim her hair. She'll also tip me then, for what I did today, because our school is GAY and you can't tip more than $5 on a debit card. STUPID ASS SCHOOL.

Anyways. School is going well. I'm still nervous, and trying to find my way at some times, but overall, I think its going well.

I still can't believe that I'm a quarter of the way done!

Today I did 3 cuts,

Long Layer ( well I finished this one from yesterday )

Medium Layer

Graduated layers

Graduated Taper ( I THINK?? )

Yikes.

Too many make it confusing, if you ask me.

But I did okay. Thought I was going to jack up my manikin, but his hair looks pretty good.

I have lots of hurr in my cleavage though. And it was shooting at my face at times.

Haha.

Tomorrow is Thursday! Test in Theory and 3 more mens cuts :)

CUTTING HAIR IS HARD.

Honeymoon is over.

Today was the hardest day so far. And I am being so hard on myself, ( I don't know why, because I am NOT a perfectionist ) and I have to keep telling myself ITS YOUR FIRST TIME CUTTING HAIR EVER!

I kept loosing my " guide " and I didn't finish it all the way, so I'll have to tomorrow. I'm really worried that it is all uneven.

Basically its a long layered cut on a male manikin with long hair. . . So I won't know how I did, until it's finished. I'm nervous, but I just need to practice.

I also HATE how I have to hold the scissors...

One good thing though, when I got in the " zone " with cutting, it felt VERY natural to me.

I know I can do this.. ..

P.S

[info]angelfsh LUCI! When your jheri kurl came in, why didn't you try to talk her into getting her hair texturized instead???? I just learned that today :) And how you can use relaxer and comb through it, to get the SAME result as a " soft curl perm aka Jheri Kurl ". . .

What I like to call, " Ethnic Hair Week " is over. And I am excited because it is SO not intimidating like I thought it was going to be! Watching a LIVE " demo " really is awesome and cuts through those fears.

However, braiding and cornrowing is not going to be my forte I believe. . .

Tomorrow, Jenn and her sis are coming in and then April ( my co-hort in crime at school ) is going to blow out my hurr to make me beautiful.

Then TWO days off in a ROW! Sun AND Monday.

Aw. Heaven.

Next Week : Mens haircutting

I so try to update this daily, for me rather than anyone else who reads this. . .

Today we practiced chemical relaxers. Using our manicans and cholestoral ( a cream substance used to condition the hair, similar texture to the relaxing product ) and I get it. But what worries me about ethnic hair, is that with relaxer, you CANNOT get it on their skin. =/

With thermal heating, the combs are CRAZZZZZZZZZZY HOT! So I just hope that I can practice enough to get it DOWN!

I think that I want to work in a midscale salon. If I lived in Colorado, I would TOTALLLY go back to work at the Great Clips downtown. AMAZING location, always busy.

But here, I don't really know. I used to NOT want to work and Toni and Guy, and now I think that I may at least check it out.

Also, Dolce was recommended to me ( in Chandler ) and I know a girl who does nails there.

I need to do some investigating to salons on the West side, because I DO NOT want to commute and my guy and I are planning on buying a house in a year or so, and we are thinking of staying on the West side.

So I dunno! I know that if I work somewhere like the salons I mentioned above, that I will HAVE to apprentice, which also kind of sucks.

So I may look into some " lower " salons in a GOOD location. Like there is a Cost Cutters/Fantastic Sams, somethng to that effect on University and Rural. Its a low cost salon that does color as well.

I would love to work there, you are RIGHT by ASU, hello. When I went in there once to get a cut, it was somewhat busy and the clientele was college kids.

I am hoping to have a better feel for where I want to work soon!

Argh!

I learned Thermal Heating today with a hot comb that sits in a oven and gets hot. " Outdated " in " white " salons because we use flat irons - but its the bread and butter in a ethnic salon.

Its very hot and was intimidating when I first saw it. Thought I was going to burn myself or drop it when I first used it. But I didn't and then I spent about 40 mins working it on a maniquin to see if I could get it down, how to utilize it.

I did :) Practice practice practice.

I believe that tomorrow we are going over chemical relaxings, and I actually have a black chick in my class so we are going to relax her hair on Friday.

Woohoo.

Next week : Mens haircuts

Following week : COLOR! :)

Week 2 is going pretty well. It's the structure of the hair - so basically chemistry stuff.

Today we went over different types of hair, what different types of shampoos and conditioners do - yada yada.

I'm really excited to get on to the stuff that I know NOTHING about. Such as cutting hair and coloring hair.

I get my hair professionally cut and colored and I have box colored my hair before, but it is NOT the same thing.

Waxing, easy, facials, easy, which shampoos to use, EASY. Now some of the technical terms are crazy, so I'll have to study when I go to my boards - but the test is multiple choice ( the written ) part, so that is good to know.

I think next week is mens cuts and then coloring and then 2 weeks of female cutting??

Don't remeber....

This week we are doing chemical relaxing, so that should be interesting.

My crazy friend Jenn and her little sister are coming in on Saturday to get waxed, facials and a shampoo and style. I am excited, because I want to practice and I don't want to be bored on a Saturday!

School was awesome.

Got to seee [info]angelfsh thought I was going to cry.

Seriously has been too long since I have seen her, BUT I know that I will get to see a lot more of her and I am super excited about that. She looks FAB too! I am so proud of her!

I did " ethnic "
hair. A shampoo and style and everyone complimented me.

Woohoo. Then I assisted with a color.

Well this week I learned tweezing, waxing and facials along with general skin care stuff.

So today we practiced on each other, I got waxed and a facial and I waxed and did a facial. The facial was okay, not my cup of tea though, and waxing was nerve racking. I want to keep doing it though, so that I can get it down to a science.

I'm just excited to be LEARNING!

Tomorrow we are playing with Make-Up so I will be bringing some make-up in.

I am not sure what we are learning next week, but I am excited!

Oh, I also took my first THEORY test ( Theory this week was nails stuff ) and I only got one wrong, out of 33. WOOHOO.

Well it went off without a hitch. Except I got on the wrong 101 to get to school.

I take the 10 east to the 60 east to the 101 SOUTH. And my dumbass got on the 101 NORTH.

But I made it to work on time. I gave myself a hour to get there. I will again tomorrow, to time myself to see how long it takes with moderate traffic and when I am on the RIGHT freeway. I just don't know that part of town all that well.

I love that I get out of school all amped, and then come to work for 5 or 6 hours. If I had to be at my job FIRST, then school, - I would have to shoot myself!

The way I am going now, I will graduate in February 2007.

WOOHOO.

The girls in my class seem kind of cool. In the beginning, for Theory - there was a couple annoying chicks, one black girl and one white girl. Basically they " hate the new rules " and " hate being in class " and just talked shit. I was happy when Theory was over and they were out of the classroom.

I mean, you are paying $12,000 for school, why the FUCK Are you there, if you want to bitch? Deal with it, salons that you will work in, won't put up with an attitude, because you are a dime a dozen.

Another girl that stayed in my class, I think she has missed a lot of class, but she was NOT paying attention at all. How disrespectful can you be? I mean, I want to absorb ALL that I can. I get lost in bookwork sometimes, because I just do. So I know that I need to pay extra attention and highlight and make notes.

Sooo, anyhow, the day went off great. I got to my office around 3:20pm and clocked in. I will be here til 9:30 tonight so that I can work 9 hours.

Mondays I work 6-6, being that this past Monday was a " Holiday " I only get 8 hours, so I need to use 3 for vacation or work them. I figure I will just work a extra hour each day today, tomorrow and Thursday. It will suck cuz I won't get any gymtime, but I will just hit up the gym on Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday to make up for it.

WOOHOO I LOVE SCHOOL! ( so far ) It's a LOT and a bit intimidating, but wow, I am so excited!

Today we went over waxing and tweezing, tomorrow is facials. WOOHOO.

Well orientation went well. Just a bunch of papers to sign, rules to go over. We also got our scrubs, 2 pairs of black scrubs. If you want to purchase another pair ( Which I most likely will somewhere down the line ) $50! Thats crazy! Well after the start of the new year, I think they are $60.

I also need to buy a pair of all black shoes. I think I have a pair of penny loafers, I need to measure the heel to make sure its under 2 inches. I think it is. They are pretty ugly and I never wear them!

But I met two girls that will be starting school with me. One is a black chick named Ebony and another a white chick named April. She has a lot of ink on her arm and the back of her leg. She seems pretty cool.

She started at the Toni and Guy academy, had a baby and had to quit. She said she didn't like that school, so that is why she is starting at the International Academy of Hair Design.

The only thing that concerns me, is traffic in the AM. The school is 30 miles away from my house ( about 10 mins from my job though, which I will be going to after school, so that is good. ) And I have to be thre at 8:30, so I think my first day I will leave my house at 7:30-7:45ish, just to make sure that I have enough time with traffic, they are real sticklers about time.

You also cant have your cell phone in the building! I'll keep mine in my purse on silent, but thats crazy!

I also got my boooks and a bookbag! HEAVY books, but I am excited! The teacher who did my orientation, Miss Gloria, seemed really nice. She had pretty green eyes and is Italian like me :)

I start on Tuesday and if I have perfect attendance, I will be done in 52 weeks. I don't see myself missing ANY school, with the exception of going out of town for St Pattys Day. I already asked them about that, and they said that is fine, just try to give 30 day notice.

I'm so excited!

Well this is my LJ to write about what I have learned, and am loving ( or hating ) about Beauty School.

I'm 27 and on January 3rd, will start at the International Academy of Beauty in Chandler Arizona. I'll be going full time and working in the evening.

I should be done with my program in just about a year.

Tuition is 12,000 which I am going to get financial aid to help my broke ass out with. I also should qualify for a bit of Pell money, since I didn't work for 6 months out of 2004. ( pell is based off of your tax info for the previous year ).

I'm extremely excited about school. Just walking around the school is exciting to me. I can't wait to learn things that I have a genuine INTEREST in.

I have orientation on Friday at 1pm. :)
